What are EOR surfactants?
Surfactants are chemicals that reduce the interfacial tension between oil and water and alter reservoir rock wettability. This shift helps trapped oil droplets detach more easily from rock surfaces and flow toward production wells.
By improving oil and water relations, surfactants can significantly enhance oil recovery, unlocking additional value from reservoirs previously considered uneconomical.

BASF provides surfactants and tailored formulation solutions for chemical EOR across a broad range of reservoir conditions, from moderate environments to high-salinity, high-temperature applications.
With deep formulation expertise and continuous surfactant innovation, BASF develops customized systems that deliver salinity tolerance beyond 25% TDS, performance at temperatures above 150 °C, and greater formulation robustness throughout the flood.
Technical Support

Sustainability

Several of our surfactants are produced from biobased feedstocks, like oliochemicals and alkyl polyglycosides, meaning they are derived from plants and are biodegradable.
Surfactants also improve the efficiency of natural resources by improving oil cuts & reducing water use, allowing you to secure more oil out of the ground with less energy spent on uplift.
